Sidney Walsh's historical marker collection of Washington State markers, 1938-1966.

This collection consists of the files of Sidney J. Walsh relating to the historical markers program. Sidney J. Walsh was head of the statewide landscape division for the Washington State Dept. of Highways. Walsh worked with the Washington State Historic Sites and Markers Commission since its inception until it was abolished in 1967. Over the years he created an extensive file of historical material relating to the state highway markers and other historic sites. It includes: correspondence, pencil sketches of proofs for the illustrations on the markers; blueprints; blue line prints of markers; texts of markers; photographs; files relating to the Washington State Historical Sites and Markers Commission; contracts, work order records and job charges for the historical marker sites; typescripts of articles and the booklet titled, Historical Markers published by the State of Washington Dept. of Highways.

Sidney J. Walsh was born Jan. 26, 1900 in New York City and moved to California as a child. He moved to Olympia, WA in 1931 and began work for the Dept. of Highways. In 1934 Walsh was made the head of the newly formed statewide landscape division of the Dept. of Highways. In this capacity, he was responsible for the creation and continuing development of the historical marker program of the Dept. of Highways.
